digital daydreams in Kenya

Farmer Zack Matere has discovered the power of the internet.

While Matere isn’t the typical internet user, living on his farm in Seregeya, Kenya, he’s found the internet is an important tool for anyone, anywhere. Because he is miles away from the nearest computer, Matere uses his cell phone to connect to the internet, which costs him about 66 U.S. cents per day.

When Matere’s potato plants were dying of an unknown disease, he was able to use the internet to discover what the problem was and how to fix it. Uses like these ensure that rural farmers don’t lose their crops, a predicament that could leave them without a source of income and food to feed their families. Since the internet has helped him improve his life, Matere is eager to share his knowledge with people around him, to make his community stronger.

Since he is the only one with an internet-enabled phone, Matere posts information he gleans from the internet on a local noticeboard to share with his fellow farmers. He helps his community avoid plant diseases, like the one that almost claimed his potato crop, and scams when selling their crops.

Matere has also used his phone to take photographs of a group of young people who have been endangering the area’s water supply. By posting the photos online, Matere was able to get help from the Forest Action Network to protect the nearby water sources. He hopes that by showing locals how the internet can help them, he will be able to improve lives for Kenyans.

That other Ryan?... yeah, he aight!

I wrote, produced, arranged and recorded this record more than four years ago and it just recently surfaced on the web as a "new" song. More interesting is the fact that I walked into Duane Read on Broadway two nights ago and a girl in line stopped me excitedly to say, "Ryan, I'm listening to you right now". She handed me her left headphone and there it was blasting: "When I think about love, you're the one I want..."

I'm a true Ryan Leslie fan. He understands the power of the digital world, and it is great to see a certified artist use it to their advantage in the inevitably changing and damaged music industry. All the youtube videos, Twitter promotions, and his transparent approach to his personal website should be sold as a manual in 'building a buzz for dummies... err artists'. He's consistent, dedicated, and produces great music- all for the world to partake in not only the finished product, but the creation process as well. Which gives the audience a fishbowl sense of fanaticism to fully engage with their beloved artist. Harvard grad, producer, singer, songwriter, musician: The ever so talented Ryan Leslie.

You're so VANE

VANExSEBAGO

Woke up this morning and saw these little beauties in the spiderWEBs. I'm mad because these are way nicer than the all black lighthouse SEBAGO's i got last year. Oh well

Also woke up this morning with this little beauty of a tune in my head. Strange because I don't have it on my IPOD, nor do they play it present day here in NYC. Definitely one of those Jams that remind me of suburban life in Orange County. An Ode to the naivete and teen spunk that was power pop and Ska music. bowling shoes, plaid pants, obscure blue collar work wear donning a blue collar work name like "Billy". Life was easy, safe, and fun back then.

Some people hate...

A lot of people hate on New Yorkers, or those that choose to live in the big city of dreams. I think its jealousy for the simple fact the world is on every street corner here in New York City. Dreams are up the block, and the magic of that reality fills the air day and night. If you want it bad enough, you really can get it here. And with this fact in mind, nobody likes the kid living the charmed life. He's too lucky and its just too easy for him. They call it the "crabs in the bucket" effect. Each crab wanting to make it out as badly as the next; and seemingly just as one nears the top, another pulls it down. I admit I've been that beady-eyed red hue of an envying crab on a few occasions. Everyone has at some point. I believe it is human nature to want and desire the most success or achievement for yourself in every aspect of your life. Ownership of your destiny and spoiled by constant triumph. You long for it because you feel your worth and sense of pride deserves it as much as the next man. But what I've come to realize is your journey is custom made and built for you in a special way. You have to make light and harness that unique quality; whatever it is, and cherish it as much as possible to be a shining reflection back into the world. Part of your success, and equally the reason why people find themselves wanting, is finding yourself. I am conscious and ever working at knowing myself as best as i possibly can, doing me. The happy crab with the unclenched claw.
